Why is this course important?

Warehouse operations can present a wide variety of potential hazards to workers.

Health and Safety Executive (HSE) figures show that in 2016-2017, 1.6% of workers were injured in the warehousing and transportation support industries

This warehouse injury rate is over 5 times higher than the average for all other industries. This is because more hazards are present than in most other workplaces.

In warehouses, injuries are often cause by

  • slips, trips and falls
  • manual handling tasks
  • working at height
  • vehicles in and around the warehouse
  • moving or falling objects

Improper behaviour increases the chance of hazards causing injuries.

For example

  • Unsafe use of forklifts.
  • Poor stacking of products.
  • Failure to use the right personal protective equipment.
  • Not dealing with slippery floors immediately.
  • Incorrect lifting technique
  • Not responding to training

This course provides the knowledge needed to work safely in warehouses, reducing the risk to you and others.

Working in Warehouses

In the UK more than 145,000 people work in over 7,000 warehouses. A warehouse is a commercial building for storage of goods. Warehouses are used by manufacturers, importers, exporters, wholesalers, transport businesses, customs, etc.

They usually have loading docks to load and unload goods from trucks. Sometimes warehouses are designed for the loading and unloading of goods directly from railways, airports or seaports.

They often have cranes and forklifts for moving goods. A warehouse worker’s job tends to vary depending on the specifics of the warehouse and what is stocked or processed there.

Due to the unique combination of vehicular, electrical, slips, trips-and-falls, lifting, repetitive motion, chemical, respiratory and fire hazards found in warehouses, the warehousing industry’s injury rate rises over 5 times the average for all industries combined.

FAQs

Study method describes the format in which the course will be delivered. At Reed Courses, courses are delivered in a number of ways, including online courses, where the course content can be accessed online remotely, and classroom courses, where courses are delivered in person at a classroom venue.

CPD stands for Continuing Professional Development. If you work in certain professions or for certain companies, your employer may require you to complete a number of CPD hours or points, per year. You can find a range of CPD courses on Reed Courses, many of which can be completed online.

A regulated qualification is delivered by a learning institution which is regulated by a government body. In England, the government body which regulates courses is Ofqual. Ofqual regulated qualifications sit on the Regulated Qualifications Framework (RQF), which can help students understand how different qualifications in different fields compare to each other. The framework also helps students to understand what qualifications they need to progress towards a higher learning goal, such as a university degree or equivalent higher education award.

An endorsed course is a skills based course which has been checked over and approved by an independent awarding body. Endorsed courses are not regulated so do not result in a qualification - however, the student can usually purchase a certificate showing the awarding body's logo if they wish. Certain awarding bodies - such as Quality Licence Scheme and TQUK - have developed endorsement schemes as a way to help students select the best skills based courses for them.
